40 songs from 2009

needless to say, the release of georgie's favorite music of the past calendar year has a similar impact on the music industry as the yearly publication of the michelin guide on the restaurant business. hopefully, unlike in years past, an exclusion from this list will only engender minor bodily injuries and tepid attempts at character assassination.

rest assured of two facts:

(1) these ARE the best 40 songs of the year, and there is no room for debate.

(2) the 3 guys pictured above in white pants DO comprise perhaps the greatest band of the 20th century (and a strawberry milkshake goes to the first person who correctly guesses their identity).

Walker - Thanks for another great edition.

One album worthy of consideration: Amadou and Mariam's "Welcome to Mali." The title track, in particular, is a favorite. I thought you would be all over this since you are such a fan of French Imperialism.

Also, I'd be interested in your thoughts on Animal Collective. Critics fell all over themselves to praise that album... I'm all about some dissidence, so let's hear it.

Thanks again - I'm really enjoying listening to some favorites and some stuff I missed this year.

(a) i definitely love amadou and mariam (and thank you, mr. ferebee for the recommendation), but i mistakenly thought that album came out in 2008. it actually did come out in 2008 in europe, but yes, i should have included it in this year's b/c i wasn't aware of it in 2008. for those of you who haven't listened to that album, follow austin's advice and do yourself a favor. the band is from mali, are a couple, and both are blind. beautiful music.

(b) there were 3 albums in 2009 that i liked but did not love that got TONS of exposure from sources i often agree with: animal collective, grizzly bear, and the avett brothers. i have not seen animal collective or grizzly bear live, but i'm sure they'd be awesome acts. the avett brothers are one of the the most energetic live acts i've ever seen, and i'd see them again in a heartbeat. "laundry room" and "i and love and you" were good songs that i'll probably still listen to in the future, but all 3 of these albums bored me at times. animal collective was the most creative of the 3 (and had the best album cover), but there was something missing that i can't quite put my finger on. i will also freely admit there may have been some reverse-reverse-reverse snobbery in my snubs as well... :)
